Recently I had Pandora playing in my apartment and it was on the Josh Groban station. Yes, I am that kind of woman. I usually play that station not only because I like Josh Groban but because most of the music is fairly light and does not distract me while I am working. I found myself singing along to a song by Louis Armstrong that I had not heard in many years.
I see trees of green
Red roses too
I see them bloom
For me and you
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world…
He goes on to sing about skies of blue, babies cry, the colors of the rainbow and the refrain, “what a wonderful world.”
I had to stop and think about how long it’s been since I had thought “what a wonderful world.” It’s so easy to fill my mind with all the bad things going on in the world. Listen to the news and within 20 minutes your mind will be filled with all the things wrong going on around us. Get on social media and see what everyone else thinks is wrong in the world – or what they think is wrong with you!
And then you can get caught up in what you know is wrong in your life. Maybe the sin you struggle with or relationships that are broken. Or maybe the disappointment that you have not accomplished what you dreamed of accomplishing. It is a very quick downward spiral. And many of us get caught up in it every day.
In John 16 Jesus is speaking to his disciples and describing some of the things that they would be facing once he left the earth. They seemed to be pretty confused but Jesus laid it out for them very clearly in verse 33. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
He knew what the disciples were facing and he knows exactly what we are dealing with in these times. His encouragement is that he has already won the battle over all evil. His Holy Spirit is with us and we are not alone. We can face every day focusing on the good things he has given us and singing his praises that we have hope! Let’s not let Satan steal the joy we have.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Philippians 4:8
